Installing Portlet Factory feature in eclipse on linux (ubuntu)

As I continue to customize my new OS, linux or ubuntu to be more specific continues to impress me. Everything just seem to be working fine which means I can never miss Vista. One of the thinks I work with on a day to day basis is developing portlets using Webshere Portlet Factory (WPF). IBM, to my knowledge, does not have a linux WPF installation and the good news is its not the end of the road. Heres is how I setup my WPF on ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron):

1) Install under windows
2) Copy the entire IBM\Websphere Portlet Factory from the Windows machine to /opt in the linux machine
3) Replace all reference from c:\Program Files\IBM\Web.... to /opt/IBM ... In my case I had to do this in 3 files: /opt/IBM/Webphere Portlet Factory/WPFDesigner/eclipse/com.bowstreet.designer.link AND .../WPFDesigner/eclipse/plugins/com.bowstreet.designer.core_6.0.2/preferences.ini AND .../WPFDesigner/eclipse/plugins/com.bowstreet.designer.ui_6.0.2/preferences.ini (My version of WPF is 6.0.2)

4) Install Eclipse. Some great help can be found here
5) Start eclipse and under Help/Software Updates/Manage Configuration righ click Eclipse and choose Add extension location
6) Point to /opt/IBM/...../WPFDesigner/Eclipse
7) Accept to restart eclipse and verify that now WPF is available under the New menu
8) Install Apache Tomcat 5.5x. A one good guide can be found here

9) In eclipse create a new WPF project
10) Specify path to tomcat (in my installation: /usr/share/tomcat5.5/webapps)
11) Accept all defaults
12) If you hit problems during the deployment phase just make sure that the tomcat directories have the correct access rights.

And that's it. NB:One can also install Websphere Application Server Community Edition (WASCE) for linux. So nothing is impossible Cool

Some Background

My frustrations with Vista where growing each day on my work laptop and instead of downgrading to XP like what most are doing, I decided to completely switch to a full blown ubuntu desktop (used to run a VM). So this exercise was most needed for my day to day development of portlets etc. I now only missing my Lotus Notes designer but I live that to IBM to sort out and it's not a biggie at the moment.

quoteThe mind of the electorate is now so fixed against Mugabe that if he were to contest against a donkey in the run-off, the donkey would win by a landslide not because anyone would vote for it, but simply because people would vote against Mugabe.quote - Jonathan Moyo

I think MDC should have nothing to fear really. Rather pick it up from where they left off and finish the job. This is our time!

If only this could actually get to Bob himself:

Nevertheless, the current situation in Zim was long overdue and this is what I/we've been hoping for - never lose hope. The walk on the wrong side of the law is never sustainable. It will always, always come to an end.

A new Zimbabwe is finally here. What's even schweeeeet about it is that it was done through the ballot box - nice, smooth and clean!
